Sacred Lotus

 

Hello lotus! Origin c.1540 Latin.

From Greek lotophagoi mentioned in "Odyssey," book IX. Annual native to eastern Asia. Widely cultivated for it's large pink or white flowers. Held sacred by Egyptians. Lotus-eaters 1832. The yogic sense attested from 1848. Syn: Indian lotus, sacred lotus, Nelumbo nucifera.
